NOTES:
- GPS: Global Positioning System
- The first satellite navigation system became operational in 1960, and was used by the United States Navy.
- The first modern GPS satellite launched in 1978. All 24 satellites were in place by January of 1994.
- GPS satellites are located roughly 20,200 km above the Earth's surface.
- 3 satellites are necessary for exact position.
- The precision of the location derived will vary depending on the accuracy level of the receiver.
- Trilateration is similar to triangulation but uses reference points AND known distances for calculations.
- If your GPS unit has a fourth satellite capability, you can get your altitude.
